Een meisje, waarvan de ouders nog leven, begeeft zich in alle stilte naar een fontein, vult haar kan met water te vullen en brengt ze naar huis. Daar zijn jongens en meisjes die wachten om een persoonlijk voorwerp zoals een ring of een oorring, in de kan te werpen die in de nacht voor het huis geplaatst word om door de sterren gezien te worden. De volgende dag, op St. Jans prodroom dag, komen de jongens en meisjes terug samen om, terwijl ze grappige en ondeugende liederen zingen, hun persoonlijk voorwerp terug uit de kan te nemen.
