[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]De \u201cAphnean Corrinth\u201d was in de oudheid een van de betekenisvolste steden in de toen gekende wereld , maar ook in het moderne Griekenland . Zijn geografische ligging hielp Corinthi\u00eb in de ontwikkeling van een belangrijke zee handels en cultureel centrum . Reeds in de oudheid doorkruisten zeevaarders de Isthmus in Corinthi\u00eb om de kaap Maleas te bereiken . De moeilijkheid om de goederen over land te vervoeren verplichtte hen de bekende slipway (sleepweg) over dewelke de boten van de ene kust naar de andere kust gesleept werden , aan te leggen .<\/p>\n

Op de vooravond van de Industri\u00eble Revolutie in de 19de eeuw, na 2400 jaar sedert de periode van Periandros de Tiran van Corinyhi\u00eb en mede door de technische evolutie , werd besloten om het reeds oude idee om een kanaal te graven dwars door de Isthmus uit te voeren . Het uitvoeren van het project was nodig door het toenemen van de zeevaart op de Middellandse Zee en na overleg van de Internationale voorwaarden . Zo begon het zoeken nar fondsen op de internationale markt .<\/p>\n

Het graven van het kanaal zou de internationale vaart verhogen en veiliger maken . Het verbinden van Kaap Maleas met Kaap Matapas zou niet alleen het aantal aanvaringen verminderen maar ook de kosten verlagen (o.a. verzekeringspremies, brandstof en tijd) . De belangstelling van vreemde investeerders en de Griekse Staat versnelde het akkoord om het kanaal te graven , gebaseerd op de wet MTS van 1869 en getekend door generaal T\u00fcrrh . Het duurde 11 jaar , 2500 arbeiders met de meest geavanceerde technologische middelen uit die tijd om 12 miljoen kubieke meter rotsen uit te graven om het kanaal af te maken dat openging in 1893.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]
