[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Oud Corinthi\u00eb, de originele stad Corinthi\u00eb, is gesticht in de 10e eeuw voor C. en was de grootste stad van het oude Griekenland. Nog belangrijker was dat het de rijkste havenstad was van het oude Griekenland. Het Corinthi\u00eb van Paulus werd opnieuw opgericht door Julius Caesar als een Romeinse Colonie in 44 voor C.<\/p>\n

Gebruik makend van Rome\u2019s beproefde formaat voor het onderwerpen van overwonnen volkeren, werd Corinthi\u00eb bevolkt met dienstplichtige en staatloze Italianen, daarbij kwamen Grieken, Syriers, Egyptenaren en Joodse bevrijde slaven die van Corinthi\u00eb een smeltkroes van culturen maakte. Net als het oude Corinthi\u00eb gedijde ook het Nieuwe Corinthi\u00eb. Op deze strategische locatie settelden zich duizende mensen uit het Middellandse Zeegebied. Al snel kwam een grote welstand voor de heersende klasse, die vooral bestond uit vooruitstrevende burgers.<\/p>\n

Corinthi\u00eb werd bekend als een \u201cwilde\u201d stad met een reputatie van losbandigheid. Paulus werd geconfronteerd met een stad die aan de grondslag lag van een nieuw Grieks woord voor \u201cfornicate \u2013 mieren\u201d, dat was korinthiazomai. Deze reputatie was deels gebaseerd op het raport van de oude Griekse historicus Strabo, waarin vermeld stond dat er in de tempel van Aphrodite op de Acrocorinth, een 1886 voet hoge heuvel ten zuiden van de stad, 1000 gewijde prostitu\u00e9es waren.<\/p>\n

De rijkdom van Corinthi\u00eb rustte grotendeels op de controle van de handel met het westelijke middellandse zeegebied. In de tweede helft van de 6e eeuw zocht het zijn commerciele hegemonie te behouden door te bemiddelen bij conflicten tussen zijn buren, vooral Athene, Thebe en Sparta en door zijn medewerking te verlenen aan de Panhellenic in hun strijd tegen de Perzische poging om Griekenland te onderwerpen.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]
