En pige, hvis for\u00e6ldre stadig levede, fyldte i fuldst\u00e6ndig stilhed en kande med vand i byen og bragte den med hjem. D\u00e9r ventede de unge piger og drenge, for at smide noget personligt i kanden, s\u00e5 som en fingerring eller \u00f8rering. Derefter blev kanden sat uden for huset i l\u00f8bet af natten, for at blive set af stjernene. N\u00e6ste dag, p\u00e5 St. Johannes D\u00f8berens dag, m\u00f8dtes pigerne og drengene igen, tog deres ting op af kanden mens de sang festlige og fr\u00e6kke digte.
