Dedikeret til Zeus, far til guderne, ved sammenl\u00f8bet af Alpheios og Kladeos floder, i et frodigt, gr\u00f8nt landskab. Selvom Olympia ligger afsondret t\u00e6t p\u00e5 vestkysten af Peloponnes, blev det det vigtigste religi\u00f8se og atletisk center i Gr\u00e6kenland. Dens ber\u00f8mmelse hviler p\u00e5 De Olympiske Lege, den st\u00f8rste folkefest, som blev afholdt hvert fjerde \u00e5r til \u00e6re for Zeus.<\/p>\n

Lokale myter om den ber\u00f8mte Pelops, den f\u00f8rste hersker i regionen, og floden Alpheios, forr\u00e5der de t\u00e6tte b\u00e5nd mellem Helligdommen og b\u00e5de \u00f8st og vest.<\/p>\n

Helligdommen fortsatte med at fungere i de f\u00f8rste \u00e5r af den kristne tid under Konstantin den Store. Den sidste Olympiske Lege blev afholdt i 393 e.Kr., f\u00f8r en forordning af Theodosius forb\u00f8d alle hedenske fester. I426 f.Kr.<\/p>\n

Theodosius II beordrede \u00f8del\u00e6ggelsen af helligdommen. I midten af det femte \u00e5rhundrede e.Kr.<\/p>\n

En lille landsby udviklede sig over de gamle ruiner og v\u00e6rkstedet Fidias var omdannet til en kristen kirke. I 522 og 551 blev ruinerne \u00f8delagt af jordsk\u00e6lv, idet Zeustemplet delvist blev begravet. I de efterf\u00f8lgende \u00e5rhundreder blev de resterende ruiner begravet under jordskred og mudder fra de n\u00e6rtliggende floder.<\/p>\n

Olympia forblev glemt under et lag af jord i 5-7 meterdybde. Omr\u00e5det blev d\u00f8bt Antilalos og det er f\u00f8rst i 1766, at den antikke helligdom blev genopdaget.<\/p>\n
